Villagers pay tribute to their language hero

People of Kasba village in Gournadi upazila of Barisal district paid tribute to language hero Kazi Golam Mahboob yesterday, the Amar Ekushey and International Mother Language Day. Kazi Golam Mahboob was born at Kasba village on December 23 in 1927. He matriculated from Barisal Torki High School in 1942 and then went to Calcutta Islamia College. There he was elected vice chairman of the college's student assembly. He took part in 1948 language movement as a student of political science of Dhaka University by joining the Students Action Committee and was arrested. During an agitation in 1949 demanding recognition of Bangla as state language of then Pakistan, he was again arrested. On January 31, 1952, when Shorbodolio Kendrio Rashtrabhasha Karmoparishad was formed, Golam Mahboob was made as its' convener. He attended the meeting at Amtala of Dhaka University on February 21, 1952 and joined the procession, breaking Section 144. Later on, he was arrested and spent one year in prison. Several hundred people visited the grave of the language hero at Kasba village yesterday morning, placed wreaths and offered special prayers, seeking eternal peace of the departed soul. Bhasa Soinik Kazi Golam Mahboob Foundation arranged essay competition on 'Mother Language Day', discussion on life and works of the language hero on the premises of Kasba Government primary School premises. Abul Hossain Mia, vice president of the foundation, Jahirul Islam Jahir, Kazi Nurul Matin Mashuk, Hannan Sharif, Nasir Uddin, TM Altaf Hossain, participated in the discussion. Paying homage to language martyrs, the discussants stressed on study and research on life and achievement of Kazi Golam Mahboob. They urged the government to set up a 'Bhasa Museum' at the birthplace of the language hero. They also called for naming local educational institutions and the part of Barisal-Dhaka national highway, which passes through the Kasba village, after Kazi Golam Mahboob. The Language hero died on March 19 in 2006 in the capital.
