Sixteen shrimp cultivators of Shyamnagar upazila have been sued for installing GI pipes, cutting embankment to draw saline water from Madar River into their enclosures. Sub-Assistant Engineer Krishnendu Bikash Sarkar of Water Development Board (WDB), Satkhira, filed a case against the shrimp cultivators with Shyamnagar police station on Sunday. The accused are Ganesh Mondol, Daud Ali Master, Asim Kumar Mondol, Abu Bakkar, Hafez Abu Daud, Abu Bakkar Gazi, Shawkat Hossain, Manu Mondol, Ayub Ali, Aminur Rahman, Abul Hossain, Abdur Rouf, Edris Ali, Prabas Mondol, Abdul Majed and Asim Sarkar of Kadamtala area in the upazila. The plaintiff said the government reconstructed the river embankment that was damaged by cyclonic storm Aila in 2009. But the accused had installed GI pipes, cutting the repaired dyke at several points in Kadamtala area of the upazila in the last three days since February 16 to draw saline water from the river into their enclosures for shrimp farming. The High Court recently imposed restrictions on cutting embankments to draw saline water from rivers for shrimp cultivation and other purposes and asked the authorities concerned to take action against the lawbreakers, the complainant said in the case statement. The accused cut the dyke, violating the High Court order, he alleged. Contacted, Hashem Khan, officer-in-charge (OC) of Shyamnagar Police Station, said legal actions will be taken against the lawbreakers.
