Decades-long dream of Thakurgaon people has come true with the inauguration of the district's Central Shaheed Minar at Thakurgaon Government Boys' High School ground yesterday. Opening of the monument, dedicated to the memory of 1952 Language Movement martyrs, followed honouring two language heroes of the district Md Dabirul Islam (posthumous) and advocate Fazlul Karim. Dabirul Islam was the first president of Chhatra League central committee (1949-1953), a former MLA and parliamentary secretary of Jukta Front, and Fazlul Karim is a former lawmaker. Water Resources Minister Ramesh Chandra Sen inaugurated the Central Shaheed Minar at Thakurgaon as chief guest. Later a discussion was held with Thakurgaon Deputy Commissioner (DC) Muhammad Shahiduzzaman in the chair. The DC took initiative to build the Shaheed Minar in February last year and Thakurgaon Central Shaheed Minar Nirman Committee implemented the construction project under the supervision of Local Government Engineering Department. "We are happy to get the Shaheed Minar although we had to wait long for it. We hope cultural activity in the district will flourish centring the Shaheed Minar," cultural personality and educationist Prof Monotosh Kumer De, also chief editor of local daily Lokayan, said.
