Robbers looted Tk 5 lakh from Baluchar branch of the Sonali Bank in Sirajdikhan upazila of the district early yesterday. Liakat Ali, manager of the branch, said at around 1:00am a gang of 10/12 armed robbers entered the bank by breaking open the collapsible gate. Later, they looted Tk 4.95 lakh breaking open the bank vault and decamped safely as there was no armed guard during that time at the one storey building, he added. Police arrested four people in this connection. The arrestees are -- Mozammel Haque, 50, night guard of the bank, his two sons Imran Haque, 19, and Arman Haque, 13, and Rahela Begum, a cook of the bank. Mahabubur Rahman, officer in-charge of Sirajdikhan police station said they arrested the four to interrogate them. Night guard Mozammel did not perform his duty that night. He assigned his two sons to guard the bank in absence of him and went to bed at home, added the OC. In Jessore, robbers looted gold ornaments and other valuables worth Tk 15 lakh from a house at Chhoto Khudra village in Bagharpara upazila early yesterday, leaving three people injured, reports our Benalpole correspondent. House owner Hafiz Munshi said a gang of 7/8 entered their house at about 2 am breaking open the gate of the house. They tied up the members of the family and looted 20 tolas of gold jewelry and other valuables. The robbers decamped with the booty injuring three people -Achhia Begum, Jahanara Begum and Ruhul Amin.
