Punish those guilty in Hathazari violence
Demands Rana Dasgupta
Advocate Rana Dasgupta, general secretary of the central committee of Bangladesh Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Oikya Parishad, demanded immediate arrest and punishment of the guilty persons who violated, vandalised and set fire to different temples at Hathazari upazila in Chittagong on February 9 and 10.
He made the demand at a press conference in Chittagong Press Club yesterday after visiting the upazila's affected areas.
A total of 14 temples were affected in the incident while houses and shops were looted in the area, he said, criticising the law enforcers for their 'failure' to resist the violence.
He also set a 10-day ultimatum to the administration to press home the demands, including punishment of the guilty, suspension of superintendent of Police of Chittagong and compensation for the affected people.
He said, if the demands are not met within February 29, the parishad would go for further demonstrations.
“If our demands are still not met, then we will organise a harmony meeting at Chittagong Central Shaheed Minar on March 26,” Rana added.
Engr Parimal Chowdhury and Prof Ranjit Kumar Dey were also present there.
