Criminals ransack, loot courtrooms in Jamalpur

Criminals looted courtrooms in Jamalpur and office of a bus company in Jessore early yesterday. Police and court sources in Jamalpur said, an unknown gang tied up the night guards of the court in the town and broke open the doors of 18 rooms. The criminals ransacked the files of cases and looted Tk 94,000 in cash. They also took away some counterfeit currencies and heroin kept as case evidence, reports our correspondent. Police picked up six night guards and a sweeper for interrogation. Meanwhile, the lawyers of the district held a press conference yesterday afternoon at the Bar Bhaban, demanding the security at the court. They also demanded a police camp at the court premises. In Benapole, Jessore, another gang looted Tk 4 lakh in cash from the office of Shohag Paribahan, a transport company early yesterday. Sahidul Islam, manager of the local office said, a gang numbering 4/5 entered the office in the early hours and took its guards and staff members hostage at gunpoint. Later, the criminals looted Tk 4 lakh in cash from the cash box, reports our correspondent. In Moulvibazar, robbers looted cash, gold ornaments and other valuables worth about Tk 7 lakh from a house at Fathepur village in Sadar upazila early Monday, reports UNB. Local people caught two robbers when they were fleeing in a microbus. Police said, a gang of armed robbers numbering 8/10 stormed into the house of Radhika Rani, breaking the door open at about 3:00am. Later, the thugs looted 9 tolas of gold ornaments, Tk 5000 in cash and other valuables taking the members of the house hostage at gunpoint. At one stage, the house members cried out for help when the gang was preparing to decamp with the booty. Hearing their hue and cry, villagers rushed in and caught the two robbers -- microbus-driver Mayad Miah, 28, of Brahman village and Emdadur Rahman, 25, of Hamarkona village in the upazila along with the microbus.
