Classes at Kuet to resume today

Classes at Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (Kuet) will resume today. The university was shut down on January 2 following a student clash allegedly over serving sub-standard food at an annual feast on the campus. Students have already started to return to their dormitories, said university sources. Additional police have been deployed at the campus to avert any further trouble, said Kuet public relation officer Md Abdur Rahman. Meanwhile, Kuet Teachers' Association is continuing an indefinite work stoppage that began on January 10 to press home their five-point demand. Prof Md Masud, president of the association, said they will refrain from joining any academic and administrative work if their demands are not met. The demands include withdrawal of the case filed against four teachers and 36 general students on the night of January 2, expulsion of students who were involved in beating up president of Kuet Teachers' Association during the violent clash and ban on all sorts of political activities on campus. Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Md Alamgir said, of the demands, two have already been fulfilled, including the ban on political activities on campus. Five students have been expelled for life while 15 others for two years, one year and six months each as per recommendation of the five-member probe committee. On the other hand, another 22 students have been fined, added the VC.
