End cop-criminal link to curb crimes
Speakers tell Rajshahi meet
Speakers at a community consultation meeting of Rajshahi police yesterday suggested eliminating links between police personnel and criminals and providing equal services to all to curb crimes in the city.
They also recommended that the police play an active role against drug peddlers, and also exclude controversial persons from community-police coordination committees and take extra care to control petty crimes.
Additional Inspector General of police (Criminal Investigation Department) Mokhlesur Rahman said police were trying their best to get closer to the people through serving them.
Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Commissioner M Obaidullah chaired the meeting held at Rajshahi Police Lines.
City Awami League Joint Secretary Shafikur Rahman Badsha said crimes in the city had increased in recent months as some corrupt police officials were keeping relations with criminals.
Journalist Badrul Hasan Liton said police must treat the VIPs and non-VIPs equally when people go to police stations for service.
He said crimes like murders followed by kidnap could be avoided if police responded to people's complaints immediately.
Jamat Khan, general secretary of Rajshahi Rakkha Sangram Parishad, said the spread of drug addiction was the city's most worrying problem.
Rajshahi was being used as one of the main routes for carrying smuggled drugs from India to different parts of the country, he added.
Rajshahi range Deputy Inspector General of police Siddikur Rahman, Rajshahi University Proctor Chowdhury M Zakaria, additional Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Commissioner M Moniruzzaman, politician Asaduzzaman, and freedom fighter Saidur Rahman addressed the meeting.
