Woman killed for 'dowry'
A woman was killed by her husband allegedly for dowry in Kalia upazila on Friday.
The victim was identified as Nazma Begum, wife of Jahangir of Tona village in the upazila.
Nazma's family said Jahangir married her about seven years ago. During marriage, her father Jilhaque Mussolli of Panipara village in Joynagar Union of upazila gave Jahangir a good amount of money as dowry.
Recently, Jahangir demanded more money and asked his wife to go to her father's house to bring the same. On refusal, Jahangir and his family members tortured Nazma.
On Friday night Jahangir picked up a quarrel with Nazma over the issue. At one stage, he beat up Nazma mercilessly, resulting in her death on the spot, said Nazma's cousin Kamruzzaman.
Victim's father Jilhaque Mussolli said Nazma's in-laws informed him on Saturday morning that Nazma had committed suicide. On arrival at their house, he saw Nazma's body lying on the ground.
Being informed, police rushed to the spot and sent Nazma's body to Narail Sadar Hospital for autopsy. Jahangir had gone into hiding.
