3 of a cheat gang arrested

Tk 5.4 lakh recovered from their possession

Police yesterday arrested three members of a cheat gang from Miapara of Tarail union under Bhanga upazila in Faridpur district. The arrestees are gang leader Rezaul Islam Matabbar, Ripon Akhand and Shahin Howladar. Police also recovered Tk 5.4 lakh from their possession, which they had collected by cheating a university teacher on December 22, 2011. The arrestees confessed to police that Ujjal Mallick, another member of the gang, had collected the money from a courier service using the name of one Tawhidul Islam. Two other members of the gang are Haider Sheikh and Dadon Mallik, according to confession of the arrestees. The notorious gang used to cheat people in name of 'Welcome Party', by calling innocent people through mobile phone, Barisal Metropolitan Police (BMP) Deputy Commissioner (DC) Zillur Rahman said at a press briefing at BMP headquarters yesterday afternoon. The gang members also allured people saying that they had won various attractive prizes, the BMP DC further said. The three were arrested after filing of a general diary (GD) by one Abdul Hamid on behalf of the university teacher. According to the case statement, the gang members allured the teacher through mobile phone, saying that he had won a flat. Later, they collected Tk 5.4 lakh from him through a courier service here. On receipt of the amount, the gangsters closed the mobile phone number, the GD said. Tracking the call number, the detective branch (DB) of BMP arrested the three and recovered the aforesaid amount from their possession, BMP DB officer in-charge (OC) Inspector Ziaul Islam said.
