Clashes over land leave one dead, 35 hurt in two districts

A man was killed and 35 others were injured in clashes over capture of disputed land at in Gaibandha and Sirajganj district yesterday and the day before. In Gaibandha, the rival groups clashed over capture of a disputed land at Mamudpur village in Palashbari upazila yesterday, leaving one person dead and 15 others injured, reports our correspondent. Police said Zillur Rahman and Mokhlesur Rahman of the village had an altercation as Zillur Rahman went to the land for planting Boro seedlings. At one stage, supporters of the two, equipped with lethal weapons attacked each other, leaving at least 15 people from both sides injured. Of the injured, Zillur succumbed to his injuries on way to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital. None was arrested in connection with the incident as of 5:00pm yesterday Our Sirajganj correspondent reported that over 20 people were injured in a clash between two rival groups over capture of a disputed land at Shyampur village in Sadar upazila on Sunday afternoon. Witnesses said Abdus Salam and Mojam Khan of the village resisted their rival Abul Kashem of the same village while he was planting Boro seedlings on the land at around 3:00pm. Soon after the incident, the supporters of two rival groups attacked each other, leaving at least 20 people from both sides injured. They also ransacked five houses during the clash that lasted for an hour. Of the injured, Abul Kashem, Abdur Rashid, Abdus Samad, Musfiq Uddin, Karim Sheikh, Babu Mia, Rasel Sheikh, Anowar Hossain and Mamata Khatun, were admitted to Sirajganj General Hospital and different private clinics while the rest given first aid. Among them, condition of Mamata was stated to be critical, said hospital sources. Sub-Inspector Sayebur Rahman said police arrested one Shahidul Islam, Asadul Islam, Babu Mia and Mojer Ali from the spot.
