80,000 families to get facilities

Some 80,000 ultra poor families, which are dependent on women's earnings, will be brought into the mainstream of development as the government has taken a project to ensure their food and livelihood security, officials said. They said the destitute women under the project will be given training on various activities such as nutrition, primary health, human rights, AIDS, mother and child care, and gender issues which would help them to upgrade their life status. The project titled "Food and Livelihood Security (FLS)" will be implemented in 22 upazilas of Chapainawabganj, Natore, and Naogaon districts by June 2014. The department of women affairs is entrusted with the project to be implemented at a cost of Tk 224 crore. The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) has already approved the project. The European Union (EU) will provide 96.72 percent of the fund to the project while the government will supply the remaining 2.41 percent from the national exchequer. According to officials, different non-government organisations (NGOs), under the project, will motivate the destitute women for saving money and will also bring them under micro-credit to improve their living standard.
