No classes, only playtime when teachers are absent
"We have no class today as Head Sir has gone to the upazila education office and another teacher has taken leave. And so, we are playing," said Munni Akhter, a class five student of Niyamatpur Government Primary School in Baliadangi upazila under the district.
During a visit to the school at 12:30pm on Monday this correspondent saw the schoolchildren playing and running as the school remained without teacher that day.
"At present two teachers including me give lesson to 179 students of five classes as another teacher retired a few months ago. Often I have to go to the education office or attend meetings for sub-cluster and cluster programmes and other purposes, leaving a single teacher to conduct the classes," said headmaster Farayez Hossain as he was contacted by this correspondent later.
"In the last Primary Terminal Examinations 41 of the 47 examinees from this school passed. But this year I am worried about the students' progress, especially if the vacant post of the teacher is not filled soon," he said.
