Rape of hill woman triggers protest

Leaders of Hill Women's Federation (HWF) yesterday demanded immediate arrest and punishment of the culprits who allegedly gang-raped a hill girl in Mogaichhari area under Lakkhichhari upazila on Wednesday. They held a rally in Shanirbar Bazar area in the town yesterday to register their protest. The speakers at the rally also demanded necessary treatment of the victim. They alleged that rape and other forms of sexual abuse against the indigenous girls are taking place frequently in the CHT and the victims rarely get any justice. They urged the government to take immediate steps to stop the harassment of hill women and ensure their security. Later, several hundred indigenous women and schoolgirls headed by the leaders brought out a protest procession from Shanirbar Bazar area and paraded different streets of the district town. Earlier, a 17-year-old Chakma girl of Tullakarbarypara area under Laxmichhari upazila of the district was gang-raped allegedly by some Bangalee settlers in Mogaichhari area on Wednesday. The girl was going to her relative's house at Naniyarchar of Rangamati district with one of her cousins. At least seven unidentified Bangalee youths waylaid them at Mogaichhari and took the girl to a nearby bush and violated her, the victim told this correspondent at the hospital. Officer in-charge of Lakkhichhari police station Kamrul Hasan said that the victim's elder brother later filed a case accusing seven Bangalee youths on Wednesday evening.
