Kuet imposes ban on politics on campus

Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (Kuet) authorities have imposed ban on political activities on the campus by students and teachers. Besides, teachers, officials and employees of the university have also been asked to strictly abide by service rules as directed under Section 44(5) of the Kuet constitution of 2003, said a notice issued by registrar Md. Abdur Rouf on Wednesday. Contacted, Abdur Rouf told this correspondent yesterday that ban on processions, meetings, putting banners, pasting of posters and holding placards both by students and teachers has been imposed to maintain law and order and congenial academic atmosphere on the campus. Kuet has remained closed since January 2 following violence on campus that left 25 students and teachers injured. Violence erupted as general students strongly protested serving of low quality food at the annual feast held on the night of January 1 at Amor Ekushey Hall of the university. Fund required to hold the annual feast was raised from general students by Kuet unit of Chhatra League. Leaders and activists of Kuet unit BCL aided by non-students from outside, vandalised the residence of vice chancellor and several rooms of administrative building during the rampage. On the night of January 2, Chhatra League activist Zobair Ahmed of the university lodged an FIR with Khanjahan Ali police station accusing 36 general students and four leaders of Kuet Teachers' Association of vandalism. Besides, public relations officer Abdur Rahman filed a general diary on January 5 in connection with attacks and vandalism. Later on January 7, director of students' welfare affairs Dr. Shibendra Shekhar Shikder, assistant provost of Amor Ekushey Hall and associate professor of civil department Sajol Kumar Adhikary resigned from their posts in protest against violence.
