6 injured as ruling party cadres attack BNP men

Six people were injured as the activists of Awami League and Jubo League attacked BNP men at Chandanimahal under Digholia upazila yesterday noon. The BNP supporters were attacked allegedly for working in favour of Abdur Rafique Mallick in the by-election to Senhati union parishad in the upazila. OC of Digholia PS said, a police team rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Earlier on Thursday night and Friday, 12 others were injured in post-poll violences in Senhati union. The violence erupted soon after poll results to the vacant post of Senhati UP chairman were announced at 9pm on Thursday, declaring Awami League candidate Farhana Halim elected. The seat had fallen vacant following murder of her husband Gazi Abdul Halim,Senhati chairman and AL leader. Farhana Halim defeated her nearest rival of BNP Abdur Rafique Mallick by a margin of only 223 votes. The 12 injured in the post-poll violence on Thursday night and Friday include a student -- Monir Hussain of Daulatpur Govt. B.L. University College. According to witnesses and police, cadres of Awami League and Jubo League started vandalising houses of BNP, Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal leaders soon after the results of the by-election were announced. The ruling party backed hoodlums also vandalised and looted many roadside shops on Friday noon while celebrating victory of Farhana Halim, witnesses and police further said. Contacted, Farhana Halim told this correspondent yesterday that she had requested police and Rapid Action Battalion-6 to deal with this unwanted situation ruthlessly to maintain law and order in the upazila as she does not support violence in the name of celebrating her victory.
