Suspected Tahrir adviser discloses some names

Detained physician Golam Haider Rasul, who was arrested on suspicion of being a policymaker of banned Islamist outfit Hizb ut-Tahrir, yesterday reportedly disclosed names of doctors, teachers and businessmen involved in the organisation's activities. He made the disclosure on the second day of a seven-day remand after being arrested by Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) from the capital's Uttara, said Habu Miah, sub-inspector of Uttara Police Station and investigation officer (IO) of the case. Members of the elite force arrested cardiac surgeon of United Hospital Golam Haider on January 24 with leaflets and other publications of the banned organisation in his possession. “Golam Haider has disclosed many names, which will assist us in arresting his accomplices including leaders, activists and financers of the Hizb-ut-Tahrir,” said Habu Miah. Haider mentioned some names including the names of doctors, teachers and businessmen, said the police officer. The IO said Haider admitted his involvement in the banned organisation and that the doctor still believes in the organisation's philosophy of implementing Khilafat system in the state. Golam Rasul disagrees with Rab official Golam Rasul, father of detained Golam Haider Rasul, disagreed with a remark made by a Rab official in a report published in The Daily Star on January 25 on the arrest of his son. In the report, Lt Col Ziaul Ahsan, chief of Rab's intelligence wing, said that Golam Rasul said he himself supports the Hizb ut-Tahrir. In an e-mail on January 25, Golam Rasul denied the allegation and said, “I was never a supporter or member of Hizb ut-Tahrir, I am not a supporter now, nor will I be one in future.”
