Death of Polytechnic Student in Kaptai
Punishment to cops demanded
The students of Bangladesh Sweden Polytechnic Institute (BSPI) in Kaptai yesterday demanded immediate resumption of academic activities and punishment to the police personnel responsible for shooting one of their fellows dead in a recent violence.
In order to press an eight-point demand, which also include withdrawal of police from the campus and withdrawal of cases against the students, they brought out a coffin procession and formed a human chain in front of Chittagong Press Club in the port city.
The polytechnic institute was closed for an indefinite period on Tuesday, a day after a clash between the students and police left Mohammad Raihan, a second year student of the institute, dead and 24 others including four police personnel injured.
The violence broke out in Kaptai upazila headquarters as a mobile court handed Shakil, a fourth year student and president of BSPI unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League, seven days' imprisonment for not possessing a licence and driving his motorbike at high speed.
