Man jailed for demanding dowry
A court here Tuesday sentenced a man to two years' imprisonment for demanding dowry from wife.
The court also fined convict Akkas Ali, son of Abdul Mannan of Baliadanga village in Sadar upazila, Tk 5,000, in default, to suffer three months more in jail.
According to the prosecution, Akkas married Sakhina Khatun, daughter of Zahidul Islam of Shangkarpasha village of Abhoynagar upazila on March 21, 2003. The couple has two children. Sakhina gave Tk 50,000 to her husband for business and her father gave valuables to him after the marriage.
But Akkas recently started torturing Sakhina to bring Tk 50,000 more from her father as dowry. Later, Sakhina filed a case against him under Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.
After examining the records and witnesses Senior Judicial Magistrate S Mohammad Ali handed down the verdict.
