'Govt firm to try war criminals'

State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Jahangir Kabir Nanak yesterday said the government is committed to try war criminals as they were involved in heinous crimes against humanity in 1971. Nanak said this while inaugurating as chief guest the two-day Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Festival-2012 in the morning at Shaheed Hadis Park in the city. Presided by KCC mayor Talukdar Abdul Khaleque, the function was attended and addressed by mayors of different city corporations. Nanak blamed the opposition BNP for trying to create a chaotic situation in the country by harbouring the war criminals and their cohorts. But the patriotic people are now united under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to foil any sort of conspiracy, he said. He said that his government is sincere to establish city government to empower the city corporations economically. Mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation Dr Selina Hayat Ivy in her speech called upon the government to free entire country from war criminals by the current year. Mayor Shawkat Hossain Hiron of Barisal City Corporation and panel mayors of Rajshahi, Chittagong and Sylhet city corporations in their speeches demanded city government and adequate allocation of fund for implementation of different development projects to provide better services to the people.
