Law enforcers arrested two poachers along with 30 kilograms of venison in Patharghata upazila of Barguna district on Saturday. The arrestees are Malek Gomasta, 45, ringleader of a poacher gang, and his accomplice Abdul Barek, 30, of Kaliarkhal village in the upazila. Acting on a tip-off, law enforcers from Patharghata Police Station took position at a point on Bishkhali river at Kaliarkhal at around 9:00am to arrest a gang of poachers, said Ujjal Kumar, officer-in-charge of the police station. Later, they chased a trawler coming from the Sundarbans and arrested the duo with 30 kilograms of venison kept in polythene bags. The law enforcers also seized the trawler. The arrestees were wanted in two cases filed with Patharghata Police Station for looting fishing trawlers and kidnapping fishermen, the OC added. Police produced the arrestees before the Upazila Judicial Magistrate's Court that sent them to jail at around 2:00pm. Abdul Latif, Patharghata upazila forest officer, said Malek has long been involved in poaching deer. Forest officials told UNB that the poachers caught four spotted deer by setting traps in the Sundarbans. Several gangs are engaged in poaching deer in the mangrove forest to make quick bucks from selling venison and deer skin, they added.
