50 injured as cops, students clash in Gopalganj

At least 50 people were injured as police yesterday charged batons to disperse the angry students who barricaded Dhaka-Khulna highway in Gopalganj Sadar upazila protesting harassment of one of their fellows allegedly by transport workers. The trouble began following an altercation between a student of Chandradigholia Polytechnic Institute and a staff of a local bus over fare around 9:00am. At one stage, bus staff pushed the student, Russel Sharif, off the running bus. Hearing the news, the students of the institute came out of the campus at Chandradigholia in Sadar upazila and put up barricades on Dhaka-Khulna highway, disrupting traffic on the road for three hours from 10:00am. The agitating students also vandalised at least six vehicles. Being informed, police rushed to the spot and charged batons on the students who hurled brick chips at the law enforcers. Locals said seven to eight passengers also sustained minor injuries during chase and counter chase between police and students. During the clash, at least 50 people, including five policemen of Sadar Police Station, were injured. Police arrested five students from the spot. They are Mithun Dash, 19, Tanu Sharif, 17, Jorip Munshi, 16, Dulal Chowdhury, 30, and Rejaul Chowdhury, 28. Campus sources said police later entered the institute and allegedly harassed the principal and general students. Contacted, Principal Mohammad Saiful Islam confirmed the incident.
