Man lands in jail for torturing wife

A Jessore court on Wednesday sentenced a man to jail for two years for torturing his wife for dowry. Convict Abdul Hannan is son of Mofiz Uddin Sarkar of Jhumjhumpur under Sadar upazila in Jessore. District and Sessions Judge Court Judge Sheikh Mofizur Rahman handed down the verdict after examining the records and witnesses. According to the case statement, Hannan married Kohinoor Begum, daughter of Hafizur Rahman of Shantala village of Sadar upazila on December 14, 1997. Soon after their marriage, Hannan started to torture Kohinur in a bid to realise Tk 50,000 as dowry from her parents. On October 31, 2010, Hannan beat up Kohinoor mercilessly as she refused to bring the money and sent her to her father's house. Later, Kohinoor filed a case alleging torture by husband. In Jamalpur, body of a housewife was recovered from a remote char under Begacha union in Islampur upazila on Tuesday, reports UNB. The victim was identified as Maleka, 35, wife of Abdus Samad alias Gabbu Pagla of Kulkandi village in the upazila. Locals said Maleka went missing on Saturday. Local people found her body at Goaldoba char at noon and informed police. The reason behind her death could not be ascertained immediately.
