14 killed in road crashes

Fourteen people, including five of family, were killed and nine others injured in separate road accidents in Natore, Satkhira, Narayanganj, Rajbari, Rangpur, Jhenidah, Benapole and Khagrachhari early Monday and yesterday. Our Natore correspondent reports: Five members of a family were burnt alive and another was injured as their private car caught fire after crashing into a tree beside the Dhaka-Rajshahi highway at Baraigram upazila yesterday. The deceased were identified as Hasanuzzaman Babu, 44, former chairman of Moricha Union Parishad in Daulatpur upazila of Kushtia, his mother Lutfunnessa Begum, 65, wife Sikha Begum, 38, younger brother Asaduzzaman Sabu, 38, sister Tahmina Begum, 35. Babu's daughter Farzana Yesmin Prithila, 6, the lone survivor of the accident, was admitted to a local clinic with burn injuries, police said. They met the tragic end of their lives when the gas cylinder of the vehicle exploded at Rajakar square at around 3:40pm police added. Taizul Islam, Babu's cousin, said they were going to Dhaka for treatment of Lutfunnessa as she had been suffering from heart disease. In Satkhira, Abdus Sattar, 60, of village Langaljhhara in Kalaroa upazila, was inured seriously as he fell onto the Kalaroa-Baliadanga road from a trolley at Langaljhhara Union Parishad at about 6:00pm yesterday. He succumbed to his injuries at Kalaroa Upazila Health Complex. In another accident, Ayub Ali Tarafdar, 26, son of Adam Ali Tarafdar of village Bodghona in Jhhikargachha upazila of Jessore, was killed on the spot as a bus hit a trolley on Satkhira-Jessore road at Charabat Tala in Kalaroa upazila at about 6:30pm yesterday. In Narayanganj, rickshaw-puller Abdur Rashid, 26, was killed on the spot as a truck rammed his rickshaw on Dhaka-Narayanganj link road at Lampara in Fatullah area yesterday morning. In another incident, construction worker Mohidul Islam, 32, was crushed under the wheels of a truck on Dhaka-Narayanganj old road at Fatullah in the sadar upazila yesterday. Our Manikganj correspondent says: Motorcyclist Kollol Mashrafi, 32, son of Tokon Biswas of Dariapur village of Sreepur upazila in Magura died instantly as a Nasiman (three-wheeler) hit his bike on Rajbari-Kushtia road at Paikpara in Pangsha upazila of Rajbari district yesterday. Protesting the accident, local people blocked the road for about an hour. In Rangpur, Ataur Rahman, 45, of Thakurgaon, was killed on the spot and eight others were injured as a passenger bus collided with a potato-laden truck at Khadmatpur in Pirganj upazila on Monday night. The injured were rushed to Rangpur Medical College Hospital. In Jhenidah, Bicyclist Mokbul Hossain, 70, son of late Abdul Aziz of Porahati village in Sadar upazila, was killed instantly as a truck rammed his cycle on Jhenidah-Jessore highway at Tetultala bus stand in Sadar upazila at around 3:00pm yesterday. In Benapole, motorcyclist Jahangir Hossain, 25, son of Samsul Haque at Bosotpur Colony in Sarsa upazila in Jessore died instantly when a truck rammed his bike on Benapole-Jessore highway at Amrakhali yesterday afternoon. In Khagrachhari, minor boy Royal Marma, son of Hero Marma, was crushed under the wheels of a jeep while he was crossing the road in Khagrapur area in Sadar upazila of the district yesterday.
