A human chain was formed in the city yesterday demanding immediate arrest of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Satkhira district unit President Jewel Hasan, prime accused in the case for violating a dance artiste of Khulna city in the district town on January 4. Human rights activists, representatives from non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and professional bodies, socio-cultural organisations, and Khulna city unit of Chhatra League joined the programme organised by Sammilito Manabadhikar Surakkha Forum at Picture Palace Cinema intersection. Addressing a rally at the venue, the speakers strongly condemning the incident and warned of severe consequences in case of any failure by law enforcers to arrest the prime accused in the case. Satkhira unit BCL leaders hired the girl, a dance artiste, to perform at a cultural function organised by them on the occasion of the 64th founding anniversary of the student body in the evening of January 4. The victim came to Satkhira with her husband. As the couple started for Khulna at the end of the function at around 8:30pm, some BCL men snatched the artiste from her husband, took her to a house in Katia of the town and violated her, according to the case. The 19-year-old victim, also a college student in Khulna, filed a case with Satkhira Sadar Police Station Thursday morning under Women and Children Repression Preventive Act against four people --Jewel, Nazmul, Sumon and another unidentified youth. Police arrested Nazmul on the night of January while Jewell and two others are still at large. Meanwhile, victim dance artiste is reported to have been threatened to withdraw the case as learnt from a reliable source.
