Coastguards arrest two robbers after gunfight

Seize two boats, bullets; set dens of 'Gama Bahini' afire in Sundarbans

Two bandits of infamous 'Gama Bahini' were arrested after a gunfight between law enforcers and gang members in Bhaijod Canal under Chandpai range area of the Sundarbans yesterday afternoon. The arrestees are Abdul Barek, 40, son of Dalil Uddin and Abdul Latif Molla, 45, son of Toiyab Ali Molla of Joymoni village in Mongla upazila, reports our Bagerhat correspondent. After a two hour-long gunfight, coastguards chased the robbers and caught two of them along with two boats, bullets and food items. The rest of the criminal gang, however, managed to flee. Coastguards also set two dens of the robbers afire. M Saidur Rahman, commander of Mongla coastguard west zone, said when coastguard members reached Bhaijod Canal at around 1:30pm, members of 'Gama Bahini' opened fire, prompting the law enforcers to retaliate. Our Satkhira correspondent reported that police on Sunday night arrested three robbers from the Sundarbans in connection with the attack on the members of a forest patrol party on Saturday. Officer-in-charge (OC) Abdur Rashid of Dobeki forest outpost was seriously injured in the attack. Police also recovered four axes, four billhooks, a generator and a fishing trawler from their possession. The arrestees are Nur Mohammad, son of Siddiqur Rahman in Rupsha upazila of Khulna, Nurul Huda Mithu, son of Abdur Rashid of Gabura village in Shyamnagar upazila of Satkhira, and Nurul Alam, son of Amir Hossai of Bariakhali village in Chittagong district.
