One dies, 60 hurt as rival groups clash in B' baria
Land dispute leaves 25 injured in Bagerhat
One person was killed and at least 60 others were injured as rival groups clashed at a village in Sarail upazila of Brahmanbaria district yesterday.
The dead was identified as Ripon Miah, 35, a resident of West Kuttapara village.
Police said the clash was a sequel to a Tuesday's altercation and chase and counter chase between the two groups--Raihan Thakur group and Sachhu Miah group--of Thakurpara and Darjipara at West Kuttapara village, reports our correspondent.
Mohammad Gias Uddin, officer in-charge (OC) of Sarail Police Station, said the two groups equipped with spears, machetes and sticks swooped on each other at West Kuttapara field.
Locals said clash continued for two hours from 9:30am, leaving Ripon Miah of Raihan Thakur group dead on the spot and at least 60 people from both sides injured.
Being informed, law enforcers from Sarail Police Station rushed to the village. They used truncheons, fired tear gas shells and 16 rounds of rubber bullets to disperse the clashing groups, the OC added.
Police arrested two people from the spot. The injured are undergoing treatment at Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital and Sarail Upazila Heath complex.
Ripon's body was sent to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital for autopsy. No case in connection with the incident was filed with the police station concerned as of 5:00pm yesterday.
In Bagerhat, at least 25 people, including a police officer, were injured in a clash between two groups of villagers over capture of a disputed land at Kunia village under Chitalmari upazila yesterday, reports our correspondent.
Of the injured, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Bakhtiar Alam, Sayed Mohsin Alam, Sohrab Hossain, Abul Fakir, Nanna Fakir, Tuku Mir, Layek Mir, Reaz, Riyadh and Selim were admitted to Tungipara Upazila Health Complex in Gopalganj while the rest given first aid at the hospital.
Police quoted locals as saying that the trouble began when the supporters of Ruhul Amin and Mohsin equipped with lethal weapons went to take possession of the land at the village at around 10:00am.
Hasan Hafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Chitalmari Police Station, said police had to fire tear gas shells to disperse the clashing groups.
Additional police have been deployed at the village to avert any further clash, he added.
