A road connecting Moghbazar with Rampura in the city on the south side of the long awaited Hatirjheel-Begunbari development project will be opened to the public this month. The estimated four kilometre (km) long and seven metre wide two-way road, meant for light vehicles, will bypass the perennial traffic congestions on Moghbazar, Mouchak and Malibagh roads. The project director, Brigadier General Abu Sayeed Mohammad Masud, said the authorities would start laying the asphalt on the road in two weeks. The project, including development of Hatirjheel and Begunbari canals for water retention, sewer lines to divert sewage from the canals, a circular expressway and attractive bridges, is scheduled for completion by December 2012, two years behind schedule. The project will improve the traffic situation in Moghbazar, Madhubagh, Ulan, Mohanagar, Daserpara, Rampura, Merul Badda, Gulshan, Tejgaon and Begunbari, said Sayeed. State minister for housing and public works Abdul Mannan Khan, paying a visit to the project yesterday, said 80 percent of the project work had been completed and expressed the hope that the prime minister would open the project in December. He said an 8 km expressway, 8.8 kms of road for light vehicles, 477 metres of bridges, 8.8 kms of footpaths and 9.8 kms of walkways and 36.4 kms of sewerage pipes were constructed under the project. The project will enable people to walk around it and take boat rides on the canals while the roads would reduce the city's traffic congestion, Mannan said. On the BGMEA Bhaban, standing at the project's centre, he said they were awaiting the High Court's verdict which they would strictly follow. On the south portion of the project, a two-way road from Sonargaon Hotel to Tongi Diversion Road along Begunbari canal is connected to Dilu Road. The project also has a road network from Tongi Diversion Road to Rampura Bridge along Hatirjheel canal, which comprises a one-way express road with a two-way side road. A two-lane expressway goes from Tongi Diversion via Gulshan to Pragati Sarani. The north portion of the road under the project goes from Begunbari power house via Kunipara and Gulshan-1 to Merul Badda. Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha is leading the project with assistance from Local Government Engineering Department and Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority. The 6 Engineering Construction Battalion of the army is implementing the project. Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology Prof Mujibur Rahman and the project director accompanied the state minister.
