27 held for attack on cops in Joypurhat
At least four policemen were injured by a mob at a waz mehfil (religious programme) at Baraki-Borail village of Sadar upazila in Joypurhat on Saturday night.
The injured policemen are constables Moazzem Hossain, Shafiqul Islam, Safiul Islam and Dabirul Islam. They were admitted to Joypurhat Adhunik Hospital for treatment.
Police said a waz mehfil was organised at the village without taking prior permission from local administration.
As police came to know that the speakers were delivering anti-state speech, they rushed to the spot and asked the organisers to stop provocative speech. At one stage, they swooped on the policemen, leaving four of them injured, said Al Mamun, acting Superintendent of Police, Joypurhat.
As the situation went beyond control, Rab members joined policemen at around 9:00pm and dispersed the unruly men. They later raided nearby villages and arrested 27 people on charge of attacking policemen.
