13 tonnes of looted iron rods recovered, 3 arrested

Police yesterday recovered 13 tonnes of looted iron rods from a village in Ishwardi upazila and arrested three people, suspecting their involvement in the looting. Ishwardi police said a truck loaded with 13 tonnes of iron rod was heading towards Rajshahi from Chittagong on December 21. But a gang of criminals looted the rods at Koddar More (intersection) in Sirajganj district on Dhaka-Rajshahi highway. Police recovered the looted truck from Rooppur village in Ishwardi upazila on December 22. After filing of a case, police arrested the truck driver, Shahidul Islam, from Chapainwabganj district on Sunday night, investigation officer of the case, SI Abdul Hannan said. Following statement of the driver, police arrested Anisur Rahman Badal of Gobinda village and Ajmot Ali of Najirpur village in Pabna early yesterday. Following statements of the two, police recovered 13 tonnes of looted iron rods from a house at Gobinda village in Ishwardi upazila yesterday morning. The arrestees might be involved in the looting of iron rods, the investigation officer said. Police produced the arrestees in a court that sent them to jail. Meanwhile, burglars took away cash, gold ornaments and other valuables from the house of a businessman in Kumarpara area of Sylhet on Sunday noon, reports UNB. Police said a gang of burglars entered the house of businessman Sumat Nuri Chowdhury breaking open the lock of its gate in absence of members of the house. Later, they took away Tk 4 lakh, 20 tolas of gold ornaments and other valuables worth about Tk 15 lakh from the house. Later, Kotwali police visited the spot.
