Jatiya Party (JP) Chairman HM Ershad has announced that his party will hold a long march towards Teesta Barrage at Dalia in Nilphamari in last week of January to press home the demand for water-sharing of the Teesta River. Addressing an extended meeting of the party at Rangpur circuit house on Saturday afternoon, Ershad said Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh committed to give just share of water of the Teesta but he did not fulfill his commitment. This is why, Jatiya Party will hold the long march towards Teesta Barrage with the party leaders and activists, he said. He further said that the Teesta has now turned into a narrow canal as India withdraws water from the river unilaterally. Teesta Barrage, which the government constructed at Tk 1,500 crore has not come to any use of people, he added. Ershad said, if India does not agree to give just share of water of the Teesta, they will go to the international court for the same. He called upon all political parties to reach a consensus on the national issue and put pressure on India so that it agrees to give just share of water of the river. Jatiya Party district unit convener Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa presided the meeting. Party leaders and activists of eight northern districts took part in the extended meeting.
