At least five people, including two journalists, were injured when activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Jubo League allegedly attacked a BNP procession in Baufal upazila town yesterday. Kamruzzaman Bachhu, upazila correspondent of the Janakantha, and Golam Rahman, Patuakhali district correspondent of the Amar Desh, came under attack while they were covering the programme. Activists of Baufal upazila unit BNP and its front organisations brought out the procession in the morning as part of the party's countrywide demonstration programme. Police, locals and party sources said BCL and Jubo League men hurled brick chips on the procession and beat up the BNP men. Seeing the journalists covering the incident, the attackers also beat them up and tried to snatch their cameras. Later, police took the journalists to a safer place. In protest, the upazila unit BNP held a rally in front of the local party office with its leader Mizanur Rahman in the chair. The meeting was also addressed by Shahidur Rahman, Habibur Rahman, and Jahangir Hossain Talukder. Noresh Chandra Karmakar, officer in-charge of Baufal Police Station, said the situation is now under control and additional police have been deployed in different places of the town to avert further trouble.
