Villagers round up 6 suspected killers of 2 Sust students

People of two villages under Sylhet Sadar upazila handed over six suspects in the murder of two students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (Sust) to the law enforcers yesterday. They are Abdus Shahid and Abdur Rouf of Nilgaon village and Shahin Ahmed, Jamal Miah, Lal Miah and Saim Ahmed of Nalkot village. Influential and elderly people of the two villages sat in a meeting at Nalkot Registered Primary School at around 9:00am yesterday and decided to hand over the six to the law enforcers who are randomly raiding the villages every night. They with the help of other villagers caught the six suspects and handed them over to Rab and police personnel on the premises of the school at around 11:00am. Deputy Commissioner of Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) Ezaj Ahmed, Squadron leader Fazle Shahin Haque of Rab-9, Sadar Upazila Parishad Chairman Ashfaque Ahmed and and Badarghat Union Parishad Chairman Nizam uddin Ahmed were present. Police were quizzing the six suspects as of filing of this report at 5:00pm yesterday. Sub-Inspector Sanjib Das, also the investigation officer of the case, said the arrestees will be produced in the Judicial Magistrate's Court today. With the arrest of six, law enforcers have so far nabbed 10 people, including boatman Gilzar Mia, in connection with the murder. Sust students Khairul Kabir and Dipankar Ghosh Anik were killed allegedly by a gang of muggers in Chenger Khal (canal) , some 4km off the campus on December 16. Local fishermen found the bodies of Kabir and Dipankar, both second year students of chemical engineering and polymer science department, floating on the canal at Putimara the following day and informed the police.
