UP chairman held, placed on remand in Rangamati
Barkal police on Monday night arrested the chairman of Bhusonchhara union parishad on charge of his link with the incident of kidnapping five fishermen on December 6.
Chairman Dilip Kumar Chakma hailed from Barkal upazila in the district.
Md. Abed Ali, father of fisherman Ramzan Ali, on Monday filed an abduction case with Barkal police station accusing 24 people including the UP chairman.
Police yesterday produced Dilip in court seeking 7 days' remand. However, the Chief Judicial Magistrate's Court granted two-day remand, said investigation officer Sub Inspector Idris Ali.
Earlier, the five fishermen were kidnapped by a gang of criminals from near the Bangladesh-India border at Tabalabug in Borohorina union under Barkal upazila of the district on December 6.
The abducted fishermen are Ramzan Ali, 25, Mokhles Ali, 22, Zahed Ali, 20, Azahar Ali, 27 and Yusuf Ali, 30, of Bhusonchhara area in Bhusonchhara union.
The five went for fishing at midnight on the day near the border without permission from BGB, BGB sources said.
BGB and police could not rescue the kidnapped fishermen even two weeks after their abduction.
After the incident, Bangalee settlers in Bhusonchhara area staged several demonstrations demanding steps of the authorities concerned to rescue the fishermen.
On Saturday last, Parbatya Chattagram Samo Odhikar Andolan (SOA), a platform of Bangalee settlers, gave a 20-hour ultimatum to Rangamati district administration to rescue the five abducted fishermen.
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Border Security Force (BSF) of India at a flag meeting at Thegamukh also discussed the steps to trace and rescue the fishermen.
