A gang leader was killed in a gun battle with Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) at Bhashanchar on the Meghna estuary in Char Nizam union of Monpura upazila under Bhola district yesterday morning. Locals later identified the dead as Babul Howladar, 31, of Dari Chandpur under Tazumuddin police station in Bhola district, and leader of criminal gang Babul Bahini. Earlier on December 14, ten alleged bandits including Zakir, leader of criminal gang Zakir Bahini, his nine associates, and a fisherman were killed and five policemen were injured during a three-hour-long gun fight between the gang and law enforcers in the Meghna estuary. The previous day, Rab seized huge arms and ammunition from the hideout of Babul Bahini at Char Shahjalal under Charfession upazila of Bhola after a half-an-hour gunfight when Babul and his associates managed to flee, said Rab sources. Following the incidents, law enforcers continued their surveillance in the area where criminal gangs locally known as Babul Bahini, Kalam Bahini and Shamsuddin Bahini are active. Tipped off, two teams of Rab-8 reached Bhashanchar at 7:00am yesterday and started combing operation in the area. The criminals opened fire on Rab at 9:50am, prompting a gunfight with the law enforcers for over an hour. At one stage, the bandits retreated, leaving the body of gang leader Babul. One pistol, one SBL gun, two LGs, one air-gun, seven bullets and 29 used and fresh bullets and cartridges were also recovered from the spot. The body was sent to Bhola General Hospital for autopsy after lodging a case, said Mizanur Rahman, officer in charge of Monpura police station.
