400 fowl culled for bird flu

Over 400 chickens were culled and more than 1,000 eggs and several sacks of poultry feed destroyed early yesterday as livestock resources officials detected bird flu at a poultry firm in the district. A team comprised of members from district livestock office and administration conducted the culling that went for one and a half hours from 12:00am at Sajib Poultry Farm, owned by one Bidhan Chandra Mridha, at Joy Kha village of Sonaitola union under Mongla upazila. Bagherhat district livestock resources officer Manobendranath Shaha confirmed journalists about spread of bird flu in the poultry farm before culling the birds. Earlier, the district livestock resource office sent samples of dead chicken to its central laboratory in Dhaka, after Bidhan reported that chickens are dying in large numbers at his farm since Friday. Bird flu was confirmed in the test and the district officer was informed about the matter Monday evening.
