Four get life for rape
A housewife was killed allegedly by her neighbours at Mohastan Nampara village in Shibganj upazila on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Naisa Begum, 22, wife of Nilu Mia of the village.
Police said, an altercation ensued between Naisa and her neighbour Sonia, wife of Hiru Mia, over a trifling matter on Thursday evening.
Following the incident, Hiru along with his wife again picked up a quarrel with Naisa on Friday morning and at one stage they beat up her mercilessly, leaving her dead on the spot.
Police on information recovered the body and sent it to hospital morgue for autopsy.
The alleged killers went into hiding.
In Sylhet, a tribunal on Wednesday sentenced four people to life imprisonment in a rape case.
The tribunal also fined the convicts Tk 70,000 each, in default, to suffer one-year rigorous imprisonment more.
The convicts were identified as Ahad Ali, 25, son of late Rajab Ali, Nurul, 23, son of Kantai Mia of Alapur village in Biswanath upazila, Hamid, 25, son of late Maram Ali of Mahammadpur village and Runu Driver, 26, son of Akol Mia of Baldi village of Dakkhin Surma upazila.
According to the prosecution, five members of a family including housewife Rozina were going to Biswanath by a CNG-run auto-rickshaw from Sylhet city on October 10 in 2009. When the vehicle reached the City gate area of Dakkhin Surma upazila, driver Runu in the name of repairing it asked four passengers except the housewife, to get down. But when they got down Runu ran away with the housewife.
Later, the driver and his three accomplices gang raped Rozina for two days. The victim's husband Abdul Malek filed a case with the police in this connection.
