One person was killed and 25 others were injured in a fierce clash between two rival groups at Mirzapur village in Narail Sadar upazila on Friday evening. The deceased is Omar Faruq, 40, son of Afzal Sheikh of the village. At least 50 houses and 25 shops at Mirzapur Bazar were ransacked while 50 cattle looted during the clash that continued for two hours from 6:00pm. Locals said a rivalry between Bisali union parishad (UP) chairman Emarul Gazi, also hails from Mirzapur village, and Anis Sheikh, son of late Sheikh Kobad of the village, surfaced over the election in the union held in June this year. Emarul Gazi won the election, defeating his rival candidate Anis Sheikh. Friday's clash ensued after a supporter of Gazi beat up a man of Anis and ransacked his shop at Mirzapur Bazar at around 5:00pm. Hearing the news, Anis' men equipped with lethal weapons attacked the houses of their rivals, prompting them to retaliate. At least 25 people from both sides were injured in the clash. Critically injured Omar Faruq, a supporter of Anis Sheikh, succumbed to his injuries on way to Khulna Medical College and Hospital. On information, police from Narail Sadar Police station reached the spot at around 8:00pm, dispersed the clashing group and took control of the village. Fifteen of the injured were first admitted to Noapara heath complex and then shifted to Khulna Medical College Hospital as their condition deteriorated. They are Lalu Kazi, Niamul Sheikh, Alamgir, Sumon, Sohan Sheikh, Ali, Hosain Sheikh, Anju Sheikh, Mohabbat Sheikh, Samim Sheikh, Parvez Sheikh, Dulal Sheikh, Amir Sheikh, Nazim Molla and Samirul Gazi. No case in connection with incident was lodged with the police station concerned as of 5:00pm yesterday.
