BNP meeting foiled, office ransacked
A BNP protest meeting was attacked and the party's office was ransacked and damaged allegedly by the ruling party activists in Betagi upazila on Monday night and Tuesday.
Police quoting locals said, Awami League (AL) activists swooped on BNP party office at Jolisha Bazaar under Hosnabad union Monday night.
The attackers also beat up the opposition activists.
AL men alleged that BNP activist Abu Zafar at a tea stall at the bazaar on the previous night had made some 'indecent' comments against the AL chief.
On Tuesday morning, the leaders of upazila BNP arranged a meeting in front of the party office at Jolisha to protest the attack.
But the ruling party men foiled the protest meeting and also damaged the party office.
According to police, at least six people from both sides were injured in the two incidents.
The opposition leaders alleged that police remained silent spectators during the attacks.
OC of Betagi PS Abdus Salam, however, refuted the allegation and said they were investigating the matter.
Later the AL men sued 14 BNP activists on charge of defaming the Prime Minister and attacking their party men.
BNP, however, alleged that the cases were false and aimed at harassing their activists.
