Trader, old man killed in Lalmonirhat

A trader was murdered while an elderly man was beaten to death in the district on Sunday night. A gang of muggers strangled a betel-leaf trader and took away Tk 40 thousand from him at Alur Dighee village of Barobari union in Sadar upazila. On information, police recovered the body of Joynul Islam, 40, son of Abdur Rahman of the village, from a derelict canal of the union on Monday morning. Quoting family members, Jomir Uddin, officer in-charge of Lalmonirhat Sadar police station, said the gang attacked Joynul and took away the money while he was returning home from his shop at Barobari Hat at about 11:30pm on Sunday. In another incident, an elderly man was beaten to death allegedly by his neighbour at Chaparhat village of Kaliganj upazila. The body of Profullo Chandra, 70, of the village, was sent to Sadar hospital morgue for autopsy. Police arrested one Shunyo Chandra Roy, 49, his wife Phulbala Rani Roy, 44, and their daughter Anjoli Rani Roy, 22 of the same village in this connection. Amiruzzaman, officer in-charge of Kaligonj police station, said some hens of the septuagenarian damaged the potato plants of his neighbour Shunyo Chandra Roy on Sunday noon. Later, an altercation erupted between them and at one stage, Shunyo along with his family members beat up Profullo mercilessly, leaving him dead on the spot at about 7:00 pm.
