BGB recovers 6 pistols, 32 bullets from smugglers' den

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel seized six pistols, 36 bullets and 12 magazines from Hili border in Hakimpur upazila of Dinajpur district early yesterday. Acting on a tip-off, the members of Joypurhat-3 BGB Battalion led by Major Zakir raided a den of the arms smugglers in bordering Sonapur area at around 4:30am and recovered the firearms, bullets and magazines. They also recovered 39 bottles of phensidyl from the spot. Sensing the presence of the border guards, the arms smugglers fled the scene, BGB sources said. BGB filed a case with Hakimpur Police Station yesterday morning. No one was arrested in connection with the recovery of arms and ammunition as of 5:00pm. According to BGB, Rab and police sources, as many as 25 firearms, 138 bullets and 18 magazines were recovered from different frontier areas under BGB Dinajpur sector from January this year till date. Of them, Rab seized two pistols, three pipe guns, two revolvers, one short gun, four one shooter gun, eight bullets and two magazines. BGB seized eight pistols, two revolvers, one short gun, 130 bullets and 16 magazines. Police seized two revolvers. Earlier, Rab and coastguards in a joint drive on Friday arrested three illegal arms traders in Khulna city and Batiaghata upazila of Khulna district. Following their confessional statements, the law enforcers recovered 13 firearms and 26 bullets from Jongra area of the Sundarbans under Dakope upazila of the district the same day. The arms and ammunition meant for sale to the pirates of the mangrove forest were found hidden under ground on the bank of Jongra Canal, said Lt Commander Hasanuzzaman, staff officer of coastguards Mongla West Zone.
