BGB man hurt as smugglers open fire

A member of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) was injured in a gun battle with smugglers in Jamalpur border area of Daulatpur upazila in the district on Saturday night. Two alleged smugglers -- Sahjahan Ali, 35 and Sona Bhanu, 60 -- of village Jamalpur in the upazila, were also injured in the incident. The jawans arrested smuggler Nasir Uddin from the spot. Police and BGB sources said, acting on a tip-off, a BGB team from Jamalpur camp raided the area when a group of smugglers carrying illegal goods were trying to enter Bangladesh territory at about 8:30 pm. Major Arman, deputy commander of 35 Battalion at Mirpur sector, said the gunfight ensued when the smugglers opened fire sensing presence of the BGB team. Majharul Islam, 40, a jawan of Jamalpur camp, sustained bullet injuries in his hand and admitted to Kushtia General Hospital, he said. Officer in charge of Daulatpur police station Lutfar Rahman said, arrestee Nasir Uddin was produced before court yesterday and sent to jail following the court order.
