13 hurt as AL, BNP men in Lalmonirhat, Narail clash
At least 13 people were injured in clashes between the supporters of ruling AL and opposition BNP in Lalmonirhat and Narail districts on Friday and the day before.
Eight people were injured in a clash at Burimari Bazar in Patgram upazila of Lamonirhat at around 9pm on Friday night.
The ruling party men also vandalised a house and five shops owned by opposition BNP at the Bazar, reports our correspondent.
All shop owners pulled their shutters down in panic as rival party men chased each other with sharp weapons and iron rods for over an hour.
The injured were first admitted to Patgram upazila health complex and later two of them - Farid Uddin and Rahmat Ali - were referred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital as their condition deteriorated, hospital sources said.
According to locals, a Swechchhasebok Dal council was in progress at Burimari Bazar on Friday night. In the meantime, about 70 to 80 AL men brought out a procession near the council venue. They also tried to foil the programme, triggering a fierce clash.
However, Burimari union AL president Musa Ali said that the AL men did not vandalise any house or shops owned by BNP men.
In Narail, at least five people were injured during a clash between the supporters of AL and BNP at Noapara village under Lohagara upazila on Thursday.
The village is about 49 kilometers away from the district headquarters.
Sources said there was a longstanding rivalry over establishing supremacy in the village between Asaduzzaman, Lohara upazila BNP secretary, also chairman of Lohagara union and Abul Kalam Azad alias Phaki Mollah, president, Naldi union AL.
Locals said, Zakir Hossain, 34, supporter of Asaduzzaman was attacked by the supporters of Phaki Mollah with lethal weapons at noon leaving him seriously injured.
When the news reached the village, the supporters of Zaman chairman made a counter attack leaving five people injured.
Seriously injured Zakir Hossain, 34, Salina Begum, 28, Esarot Sheikh, 50, of Noapara village were admitted to Narail Sadar Hospital while others were released after first aid at Lohagara health complex.
Being informed, Lohagara police rushed to the spot to control the situation.
