'Give priority to railways to ease gridlock'
Environmentalists yesterday put priority on the railway sector to reduce traffic congestion in the city and bring down the inflated prices of the essential commodities.
They said this while addressing the inaugural programme of a campaign for better railway communications from Kamalapur to Jamalpur.
If it is possible to develop this sector and ensure transportation of the commodities through railways, it will be possible to control the price spiral of the daily essentials, they added.
Advocate Syed Mahbubul Alam said railways is an environment friendly, fuel, money and land efficient sector, transporting a good number of people at a time.
Economist Anu Mohammad said, rather than concentrating on the profits, the sector's performance should be enhanced by running the train services on time and setting more compartments and engines.
Speakers also recommended to the newly formed railway ministry to probe the sector's earlier irregularities and mismanagement.
Save Environment Movement, Nagarik Adhikar Shangrakhan Forum, Brihattaro Mymensingh Sanskritik Forum, Brihattaro Mymensingh Samannay Parishad, Mymensingh Bibhagh Bastobayon Parishad, Mymensingh Zila Unnayan and Nagarik Andolon took part in the campaign.
