Former school committee men sued for corruption

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Tuesday last filed four cases against the members of a former managing committee of Asaduzzaman Girls' High School on charge of misappropriating Tk 35 lakh. Mohammed Zahirul Huda, deputy director, ACC at Rangpur office filed the cases with Gaibandha Sadar police station accusing nine people including former director of ACC and former additional district magistrate, Gaibandha and former president of the said school managing committee Mojibar Rahman Al Mamun. The other accused are former president of school committee and president of district BNP advocate Hamidul Huq Chhana, existing headmaster of school AKM Golam Azam, former headmistress Mahela Khatun, Shahana Banu, headmaster of Gaibandha Govt High School, Md. Khorshed Alam, upazila education officer and former headmaster Abdul Baki, guardian members of the school committee Khandker Matlubur Rahman and Abdul Mannan Sarker. In the cases, the ACC alleged that in 2003, the school managing committee spent Tk 47,46,707 for the construction of a market along the school. But it showed an expenditure of Tk 64,56,753 through fake vouchers and thus misappropriated Tk 17,10,046. Besides, the then 6-member appointment committee appointed the existing headmaster of school, AKM Golam Azam, illegally and so the headmaster drew Tk 8,88,000 illegally from 2003 till date, it was alleged. The headmaster also misappropriated Tk 2,59,680 and Tk 6,88,000 simultaneously from the school fund in the name of loans allocated for the shops of school's market. The ACC filed two cases against him in this connection. Afzal Hossain Khan, OC of Gaibandha Sadar PS yesterday admitted filing of four cases by ACC Rangpur office.
