Brutality in the Name of Trial
Divorced couple tortured for meeting each other
A few villagers on Monday beat up a recently divorced spouse before cutting off their hair and painting the heads with tar in Neamotpur union of Kaliganj upazila under the district.
The criminals led alleged by Hafizur Rahman, member of ward No-4 of Neamotpur union parishad, gave the barbaric punishment to Rexona Khatun, daughter of Motleb Mia of Gholpara village, and Saddam Hossain of Talianpur village for meeting each other after their divorce.
Two months into their marriage, the couple got divorced on November 27 when villagers made Saddam to pay a fine of Tk 32 thousand to Rexona.
In response to a phone call from Rexona Khatun, Saddam went to her house on Tuesday afternoon.
Hafizur Rahman, also general secretary of ward No 4 unit of Awami League, and his aides brought Saddam and Rexona to Hafizur's house.
In the name of a 'trial', the criminals beat them up, cut off their hair and painted their heads with tar.
Hafizur Rahman and his accomplices gave the humiliating punishment to the divorced spouse in front of hundreds of people, said villagers.
"I called my divorced husband Saddam over mobile as he expressed desire to accept me again. All on a sudden Hafizur Rahman and his men reached the spot. They beat us indiscriminately. At one stage they cut our hair and painted heads with tar. They also forced me to pay a fine of Tk 6000," Rexona told this correspondent.
Rexona filed a case with Kaliganj police station at 5:30pm yesterday and proper action will be taken in this regard, said officer in charge Sayeed Kamruzzaman.
"Perpetrators of this heinous act should be punished. If someone is found guilty he or she should be handed over to the law enforcers but nobody has the right to give such a punishment," Neamotpur union parishad Chairman Liton Hossain said.
Despite several attempts, this correspondent failed to contact UP member Hafizur Rahman as his phone was found off.
