Khulna City Corporation (KCC) has decided to demolish the two-storey Zia Hall with a view to building a 33-storey city centre on the site. Zia Hall was constructed on 4.5 bighas of land in 1989 at Shibbari Road in the city keeping in view accommodation of a large number of people in meetings, seminars and cultural functions. The then prime minister Khaleda Zia inaugurated the hall in 1992. The two-storey building started developing cracks and other defects in walls, roof and floors after a few years and it became unfit for use from October last year, said KCC Mayor Talukder Abdul Khaleque. KCC Planning Officer Abir-ul-Jabbar told this correspondent that the city mayor had a discussion with architects and engineers of Khulna University, Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (Kuet), LGED and PWD about the present dilapidated condition of the building. All of them expressed similar opinion on demolition of the building, he added.
