Probe report found negligence of police in taking action after slain freedom fighter and teacher Kazi Zinnat Ali had filed a general diary (GD) against his daughter's stalker. The arrested stalker, Rupam Dey alias Rupa alias Anik, who earlier confessed to police the killing of Zinnat Ali, was produced before the Court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Abul Bashar Mia, for recording his confessional statement yesterday afternoon. The recording was going on as of filing this report. The one-member probe committee comprising ATM Masud Hossain, assistant commissioner of Barisal Metropolitan Police (BMP), submitted report to the BMP commissioner on Monday night, suggesting departmental action against the officer concerned for failure to take proper steps after Zinnat Ali lodged a GD with Kawnia police station against Rupam on August 10. Zillur Rahman, acting commissioner of BMP, said he informed higher authorities seeking permission about course of action following the probe report. On Saturday, freedom fighter Zinnat Ali, also teacher of A Wahed Girls' High School in Barisal city, succumbed to his stab injuries caused by his daughter's stalker Rupam on Friday night. A special team of police arrested Rupam from Khazuria bus stand in Jessore with a knife on Monday morning when he was trying to cross the border through Benapole. Shaheduzzaman, officer in charge of Barisal Kotwali police station, said after arrest and confession of killer Rupam police yesterday released six others including Rupam's sister. Demanding punishment to the criminals, the city dwellers formed human chains and held rallies in front of Aswani Kumar Hall and all non-government educational institutions in the city for half an hour yesterday morning. Expressing concern over the killing of freedom fighter and teacher Zinnat Ali by his daughter's stalker, teachers, students, and activists of different social and rights organisations have demanded ensuring due punishment to the criminals through speedy trial. They also condemned law enforcers' failure to provide protection for Zinnat Ali and his family even after his filing a GD against the stalker.
