18 houses, 8 shops gutted in 3 dists

At least 18 houses and 8 shops have been gutted in four incidents of fire in Thakurgaon, Pabna and Bagerhat districts. Fifteen houses were gutted in a devastating fire at Nodipara village in Sadar upazila of Thakurgaon on Saturday, reports our correspondent. Fire Service and Civil Defence officials said, the fire broke out at one Ainul Islam's thatched house as a mentally challenged woman of the same village set fire to it. The fire spread to the adjacent houses and gutted 14 other houses. On information, fire-fighters rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control. The house owners claimed the fire damaged property worth Tk 5 lakh while the fire officials estimated the loss at Tk1 lakh only. On Sunday afternoon, another house was gutted in a fire at Nimtoli village in Sadar uazila. The fire originated from an earthen oven at a kitchen, locals said. On information, fire brigade workers rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control which saved several adjacent houses, officials and locals said. In Bagerhat, at least eight shops were gutted in a fire at Andharmanik Battala bazaar in Kachua upazila on Saturday night. ANM Khairul Anam, OC of Kachua said, the fire originated from an electric short circuit at about 7:00pm at the grocery shop of Mizanur Rahman and soon engulfed the adjacent seven other shops. On information, fire service personnel rushed to the spot and doused the flame with the help of local people in an hour of frantic efforts. The affected shop owners claimed that the extent of loss due to the fire could goes upto Tk 12 lakh. In Pabna, two houses were gutted at Mohendrapur village in Sadar upazila early yesterday. Local people said the fire originated from an electric short circuit at around 2:00am at the house of Saiful Islam and soon engulfed the neighbouring house. Affected house owners claimed that cash, gold ornaments and other valuables worth about Tk 5 lakh were gutted by the fire.
