'Revoke punitive steps against 17'

Students of different departments at Maulana Bhasani Science and Technology University (MBSTU) here yesterday urged the authorities to revoke the punitive steps against 17 Food Technology and Nutritional Science (FTNS) department students. The students formed a human chain in front of the administrative building at 1:00pm yesterday and later brought out a silent procession on the campus. They also held a rally the Shaheed Minar premises. At the rally, they termed the steps against the FTNS students as unjust and inhuman. They demanded withdrawal of the decisions of the university authorities without further delay. They also warned of tougher agitation programmes in case of failure to meet the demand soon. On September 12, some students of FTNS department vandalised a few rooms and kept the department chairman confined to her office, protesting credit fee hike. After the incident, the university authorities expelled 10 students of the department temporarily and formed a probe committee. On completion of investigation, the committee submitted a report accusing 17 students of the department including the temporarily suspended ten. The University Regent Board in a meeting, presided by vice-chancellor Prof M Nurul Islam, on Saturday, permanently expelled three of the 10 FTNS students. It also took different punitive steps against the rest 14, including temporary suspension and fine.
